A popular kosher restaurant was burned down in Montreal this weekend in what is believed to be an arson attack.

Firefighters were called to Décarie Boulevard between Plamondon Avenue and Vézina Street, where Nöam restaurant is located, at 3:15 a.m. on Saturday, August 1.

Nöam is a kosher restaurant serving Mediterranean, Italian, and international cuisine. It opened in 2024.

In a statement posted on social media Sunday afternoon, Nöam said its owners and staff were “still in shock and trying to understand how this could have happened.”

“At this time, we do not know the motive, and we do not want to speculate or draw conclusions before the investigation is complete,” said the statement, signed by Ynon Cohen, Meir Azerad and the “entire Nöam family.”

“Our hearts are broken,” the restaurant’s statement said. “We poured everything we had into creating this place. Seeing it destroyed is heartbreaking.”

Apparent Arson

Police spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron told the Montreal Gazette that someone was seen leaving the premises shortly after the incident. Footage has also emerged that allegedly shows someone setting a fire in front of the business.

U.S. Sounds Alarm

At the time of publication, neither Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP Leader Avi Lewis, nor Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet had commented on the incident on the social media platform X.

American officials have, however, commented on the incident.

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra posted on X: “While the investigation proceeds, Canada’s leaders should actively work to protect and bolster the Jewish community."

Democratic Illinois Congressman Brad Schneider, co-chair of the Congressional Jewish Caucus, said he and his colleagues “are disgusted and outraged” by what he described as “yet another heinous attack on Jewish-owned business.”

“As antisemitism is increasingly normalized, violence and other attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions continue to escalate around the world,” he wrote on X. “This is a moment of crisis that requires all people of good conscience to speak up and condemn hate.”

Canadian Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, meanwhile, said the incident must be investigated as a hate crime.

Canadas Antisemitism crisis

The incident comes amidst the country seeing a crisis of antisemitism.

Last week in Toronto, two Jewish-owned bakery stores were hit by gunfire and vandalism.

Also this year, there has also been a shooting at the Temple Emanu-El synagogue in Toronto. There have been shootings at the Beth Avraham Yoseph synagogue in Thornhill and at the Shaarei Shomayim in Toronto.

Canada has seen a 124.6 percent increase in antisemitic incidents from 2022 to 2024, according to Jewish human rights organization B’nai Brith Canada. Canada’s Jews make up 0.9 percent of the population but are the victims of 70 percent of religious hate crimes.

According to a survey conducted by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), 82 percent of Canadian Jews feel less safe in their country post–October 7.

Canada’s Jewish community is once again reeling after more violence targeting Jewish institutions took place on Sunday.

Just after 8 a.m., officers were called to Kiva’s Bagel Bar near Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue after reports that a window had been struck by gunfire. Police later confirmed there was evidence that shots had been fired at the business.

Officers then responded to Kiva’s Bagel Bakery and Restaurant on Steeles Avenue West near Bathurst Street after the front door window was found shattered.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Responding to the attacks, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the attacks "are vile and unacceptable."

”We all have a responsibility to stand against hate. I will always stand with Toronto’s Jewish community against antisemitism. We will continue to invest in community safety and the necessary work of confronting hate wherever it exists.”

The thing is, many Jews feel that Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has not taken the issue seriously.

This year, there has also been a shooting at the Temple Emanu-El synagogue in Toronto. There have been shootings at the Beth Avraham Yoseph synagogue in Thornhill and at the Shaarei Shomayim in Toronto. As well, a hateful anti-Israel Al Quds Day rally took place in Toronto, where an Islamist was seen making hand gestures that appeared to mimic stabbing and beheading, while attendees held what many viewed as grossly antisemitic signs.

Meanwhile, the mayor has expressed support for anti-Israel rhetoric, the same rhetoric whose most extreme forms fuels antisemitism.

Chow has falsely accused Israel of genocide, claiming “the genocide in Gaza impacts us all,” while drawing a parallel between affected Palestinian families and her mother's experience as a child in China during Japan's invasion in the Second World War.

Meanwhile, at the Toronto Pride parade earlier this summer, a Queers for Palestine supporter approached Chow and said, "Happy Pride, Mayor Olivia." Smiling, Chow replied, "Woah, hello. Happy Pride." The supporter then asked, "Can we get a 'Free Palestine'?" Chow responded, "Yes. Free Palestine."

For several Palestinian supporters, the term “Free Palestine” does not mean giving the Palestinians a state within a two-state solution. Rather, it means Islamic liberation from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, wiping the world’s only Jewish state off the map in the process.

So for the mayor of Toronto to proclaim "Free Palestine" at a time when her city is experiencing an unprecedented wave of antisemitism is reckless.

Amidst all of this, a National Post column concluded that "Olivia Chow has herself to blame for antisemitic violence."

What Canada needs right now is unequivocal moral leadership, and that is not what we have seen in the City of Toronto, not only from municipal politicians, but also from provincial and federal officials.

That needs to change. Otherwise, I fear the situation will not get any better.

In an exclusive interview with me last month, I asked U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra about the rise of antisemitism in Canada.

Statistics Canada reported a 178% increase in police-reported hate crimes targeting Jewish people between 2020 and 2024. Jewish Canadians make up just 0.9% of the population, yet they are the victims of roughly 70% of all religiously motivated hate crimes.

Furthermore, at least 132 churches have been burned down or vandalized since 2021 amid a noticeable rise in anti-Christian bigotry.

Here’s what Ambassador Hoekstra had to say:

“It is a serious, serious issue. We have some of the same trends developing, to a lesser extent, in the United States, but we’re very, very concerned about them.”

“We do everything that we can to stand alongside our friends in the Christian community, but also, especially importantly, our friends in the Jewish community. The first ambassador I invited to the residence to meet with me when we took our posting was the Israeli ambassador. We wanted to send a message to the Israeli ambassador and the Jewish people: there’s no space between us and you. We will defend your rights as much as we can.”

“It’s religious freedom for everybody. It’s embedded in the American DNA that religious freedom and freedom of speech are absolutely essential to who we are, and we will stand for those values wherever there’s a U.S. embassy.”

Bill C-9 has passed the Senate with an amendment and has been sent back to the House of Commons for consideration.

The bill, which seeks to address hate in Canada, is controversial for many reasons, especially because of its censorship elements.

But one of the most concerning aspects is the removal of religion as a defence against hate-related charges, which some fear could lead to the criminalization of scripture on sensitive topics like homosexuality.

One of the people fighting this bill is Faytene Grasseschi, a Christian conservative advocate and founder of 4 My Canada, and I spoke to her about the stakes.

Below is our interview. Quotes have been lightly edited for clarity:

Elie Cantin-Nantel: My first question for you, Faytene, for the people who aren’t you and me and maybe aren’t following this as closely as we do: where are we at right now when it comes to Bill C-9?

Faytene Grasseschi: Well, Bill C-9 just passed through the Senate with one amendment, and it was sent back to the House of Commons for that amendment to be debated. That amendment was regarding adding the symbol of the noose to the list of symbols that would be considered hate speech or a hate crime. You could be charged with a hate crime if you in any way featured this symbol.

But in an interesting turn of events, right around this time, MP Andrew Lawton, who has been an ardent champion for freedom of speech and faith and conscience freedoms, stood in the House of Commons and put forward a motion to bring an end to C-9 in totality.

The reason for this is, though all parties and every member of Parliament or senator who has spoken to this are in agreement that we need to curb acts of hate, which are actually criminal acts of hate in our nation, and that we need to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities, there was broad concern specifically about the insertion of the amendment to remove sincerely held faith beliefs.

This was really the aspect of the bill that drew the most criticism.

Through our network, 4 My Canada, we’ve now logged over 180,000 phone calls to members’ offices. And the facilitation of mail, this is postcards and letters that people have ordered through our movement, is now up to 260,000 letters and postcards.

Elie Cantin-Nantel: Tell me a bit more about what 4 My Canada has been up to in regard to this.

Faytene Grasseschi: The phone calls, first of all, are Canadians making phone calls on their own phones, from their own homes. This is not a call centre. This is not our staff or volunteers doing this. This is Canadians doing it themselves.

How it works is they can go to our website, they can get a list of phone numbers to call, at our recommendation. There are some talking points because people always ask us to help them and to help them be more effective. Then they come back and report to us how many phone calls they’ve made, and so that’s where we get our stats from.

So it’s not a call centre. These are authentic Canadians, grassroots Canadians raising their voices.

Same thing with the letters and the postcards. They can go to our website, they can order a postcard or a letter that represents their viewpoint. When they order it, all we do is print it and mail it out for them as a service. But it’s their message, their address, and their name on the signature. This is not a mass mailing of brochures or a mass mailing of flyers. These are individual letters from individual Canadians, and as I already said, we’re up to just under 260,000 of those that have been ordered and sent.

Elie Cantin-Nantel: I remember when this amendment on religion came forward, it was supposed to be a way to appease the Bloc Québécois when we were in a minority Parliament situation. The Liberals now have a majority government, so why are they still going ahead with the criminalization of scripture?

Faytene Grasseschi: Nobody really knows.

And this is also the silver lining in this, because we do know, Elie, that there were many Liberal members of Parliament who were deeply uncomfortable with the removal of protection for sincerely held faith beliefs.

We do not understand or know why the justice minister is digging in so deeply. We don’t know why the prime minister hasn’t intervened. These are really good questions.

This will be an election issue. This will be a ballot-box issue for a lot of Canadians, and we know that there are many ridings across our nation, between 30 and 40, that would be considered swing ridings. So it’s very politically unwise for the Liberals to be doing this right now.

We don’t really know why they’ve dug in. It might just be to save face. But they can do the right thing. They can point out the obvious, and that’s that Canadians, there has been literally, if not an unprecedented outcry in recent history, possibly a historic outcry surrounding this bill.

As a matter of fact, members of Parliament and Senate offices both have said to us that they have never received as much mail or as many phone calls as they have for C-9. On any other issue like this issue, it has peaked in terms of the outcry from Canadians. There has never been anything like it.

Elie Cantin-Nantel: To someone who may not be Christian or Muslim or Jewish or religious, why should they care about this?

Faytene Grasseschi: Well, because I think freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, freedom of the press, all these things are fundamental to a healthy democracy.

And let’s put it straight: most of us are here in Canada because either ourselves or our ancestors came here for freedom.

I’ve heard people often say, “I may not agree with what you have to say, but I’m going to defend your right to be able to say it.” And I think this is one of those situations.

So you don’t have to be a person of faith or a person of a certain cultural or ideological persuasion to be concerned about the trajectory here.

At the end of it all, this is really about freedom of speech and freedom of conscience.
